Architectural Communications: Computer-Aided Design
10 Undergraduate Students
RAIC Center for Architecture, Athabasca University, Online

In this course, I introduce students to the fundamentals of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and the use of digital technology in architectural representation. I guide them in developing critical and creative thinking skills as they integrate technology into the design process. Students learn the essential techniques and drawing systems of digital representation, progressing from two- and three-dimensional drawings to detailed explorations of materials, components, and assemblies.
I help students build the ability to produce technically precise drawings and models that effectively document and communicate design intent, while also reflecting on how computerization continues to transform architectural practice. This course is not only about learning software such as SketchUp, AutoCAD, and Revit—it encourages students to navigate between platforms and move beyond them to create sophisticated, portfolio-level architectural drawings.
