The Flavors of Integration at Place des Arts
This Community theatre project produced by the Afghan Women Centre of Montreal (AWCM) funded by Canadian Heritage and staged at Place des Arts, Montreal, 2025.
This performance dramatized true stories of West Asian and Afghan women, from schools where they were forbidden to learn to the streets of a new country where their pasts were erased. It was a story of arrival, of losing everything, language, career, home, only to be expected to rebuild a new life from scratch with the Canadian dream in mind.
My contribution included management, script revision, translation, videography, acting, Persian poetry selection and recitation, and coordination with theatre professionals.
The project was well received, and I leveraged its success to secure a $5,000 grant from the Ville de Montréal for a public rerun at Centre Sanaaq in November 2025. This experience deepened my understanding of theatre’s transformative role in enabling communities—especially racialized women—to tell their stories and reclaim meaning from adversity.
