Architectural Fundamentals Studio for 15 Sophomore Architecture Students,
Spring 2017, Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Savannah, GA, USA.
Professor: Julie R. Varland
Teaching Assistant: Ali Reza Shahbazin
I was involved in guiding students to design a dwelling, studio, and gallery for three renowned artists, Robert Irwin, James Turrell, and Antony Gormley, within the Georgia Railroad Museum in Savannah. The primary aim of the studio was to emphasize the integration of art within architecture, and to assist students in the development of their projects, from the initial concept to the detailed execution, drawing inspiration from Juhani Pallasmaa’s seminal work, The Eyes of the Skin (1996).
The studio curriculum enhances students’ projects through the integration of theoretical aspects of architecture. In addition to conducting desk critiques, I delivered a comprehensive class presentation highlighting the significance and interplay of theory and philosophy within the realm of architecture. This presentation was particularly beneficial for students, as it contributed to their understanding of the importance of history and place in the context of their assignments.
